5/3rd RBR Organizers: Elite Field Strong for 25K, Security Features Remain

Fifth Third River Bank Run organizers updated the media today about the event coming May 10th.

Elite Athlete Recruiter Greg Meyer's had a busy week, returning from Boston's Marathon. He'd been the long standing "last American champion" of that race until Meb Keflezighi crossed the finish line first on Patriot's Day. "With Meb winning, that sends a message to the other Americans that 'you can compete with these guys.'" Meyer told WOOD Radio they're looking forward to two time champ Fernando Cabada and 2013 USA National Championship winner Mohamed Trafeh along with international elite runners. Close to race day, the cold call from an elite runner may be hard to support. "Unless it's a rare person, once that limit is hit, they're on their own to get here and get their own hotel room." Meyer has a recruitment budget for developing talent in the 25K race.

Race Director Kristen Aidif told WOOD Radio the registration is running ahead of normal for the 25K and 10K runners, signups from 5K run and walk participants are slightly down. "We've finally got some spring weather and we're going to see those numbers go up. If we get good weather on event weekend, we'll see them go up even more on late registration."

Aidif said they're glad the Boston Marathon was without incident this year, they will continue with added security measures for their event. "If you're planning to participate in any of the events and you've got extra belongings with you, please use the 5/3rd RBR Gear Check in DeVos Place, it opens up at 6 a.m."
