Ash Borer Beetles Cost Millions Every Year

The invading Emerald Ash Borer beetle costs millions of dollars to fight and has resulted in the destruction of a sizable number of Michigan's Ash trees in the past 11 years.

Consumers Energy company says it spends a lot to take down dead Ash near their power lines because when this particular type of tree dies, it does not just fall apart.

Consumers' Jon Hall tells WOOD TV that Ash trees to tend to fall over, whole, from about 5 feet off the ground. Each tree can weigh 20-to-25 tons.
