Bears Plague One UP Community

Bears Plague One UP Community

Wildlife officials say bears are becoming a nuisance in the Upper Peninsula community of Iron River and steps are being taken to deal with the animals.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says residents report the bears appear habituated, showing no fear of humans and refusing to leave the area. A sow and three cubs, and possibly additional adult bears, have been repeatedly seen near homes.

The DNR has set live traps and taken steps to try to get the bears to leave. Officials are distributing brochures with tips about how to deal with such bears and asking people to remove potential food sources such as bird feeders, garbage and pet food.

Sightings should be reported to the DNR. Officials warn people not to approach the bears.
