A Belgian man who swam across the Detroit River from Canada has pleaded guilty to trying to enter the U.S. illegally.
Sam Smolders was dripping wet when he was discovered on the Detroit side of the river in the wee hours of Sept. 5. The 24-year-old Smolders was raised in Arizona but had to leave the United States after high school because he was not here legally.
He says he's tried to return to the U.S., but immigration officials have turned him down. So he decided to sneak in by swimming from Canada.
Smolders pleaded guilty Thursday. Records show he was given no additional jail time.
