Business Sues Township in Dune Driveway Dispute

A family company that wants to build a 1,200-foot private driveway across a strip of government-owned Lake Michigan dune habitat is suing a township in Muskegon County.

Bro G Land Co. reportedly filed suit in circuit court against White River Township. The suit contends the company has a right to build a 12-foot-wide drive and place utilities along an easement that runs across the White River Township Barrier Dune Sanctuary.

That would give the Gezon family access to 2.2 acres their company owns along the lakeshore, just north of the preserve.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has rejected the company's application to build the driveway, saying it would damage the environment.

The suit contends the township is primarily responsible for the state's decision.
