Mayor of Grand Rapids George K. Heartwell was selected today as a member of President Obama's Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience.
President Obama established the task force today as part of his Climate Action Plan to cut carbon pollution and to prepare communities for the impacts of climate change.
The state, local, and tribal leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience will develop recommendations for the President on how the federal government can best support them in their efforts to prepare for the impacts of climate change.
Mayor Heartwell will use his experience in addressing local climate impacts to inform the Task Force's reccommendations to the President and ensure that they are responsive to the needs of places like the City of Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids is already contending with extreme weather events, and the impact from sever heat waves and floods, and has taken action to protect the city and residents from these events and other climate impacts.
