Demolition crews plan to use explosives to demolish a 10-story former power plant at the site of a shuttered paper mill in West Michigan.
An implosion is planned for Oct. 27 to take down the massive power plant structure. Two remaining 200-foot-tall smokestacks at the Sappi paper mill site are expected to be taken down separately.
Property owner Melching Inc. updated the city this week on the plans. The city commission is to consider final approval later this month.
The implosion is planned for early morning on a Sunday. Officials say it will include a series of small explosive charges on the ``legs'' of the building. Lakeshore Drive nearby will be closed that morning and businesses and homes within 500 feet will be evacuated.
