New Era In Health Insurance Just Days Away

Michigan's new era of health care begins within days.

Tuesday is when many of the state's 1.1 million uninsured residents can start deciding how best to obtain coverage required under the landmark federal health care law. An online insurance market will launch. It will give lower- to middle-income workers without insurance the chance to buy a private plan with the help of tax credits.

Though Tuesday is the first day to sign up, there is no rush. The deadline to be covered in January is Dec. 15. And people have until March 31 to sign up for a plan on the ``exchange'' without being penalized.

Within five years, the state's uninsured rate could drop from 11 percent to 6 percent of the population under the health insurance overhaul.
