Power Company Wants the Maximum Sentence for Wire Thief

Power Company Wants the Maximum Sentence for Wire Thief

Thieves stole copper wiring from two dozen Consumers Energy power substations this past year.  One of the most recent copper thieves is a Robert Wesley, 64, of Grand Rapids.

He will be sentenced next month for cutting through a security fence to steal thousands of dollars worth of wiring from the Wealthy Street substation, which the power company says supplies electricity for the entire city's wastewater plant.

Wesley reportedly stole wiring from the same substation nine years ago.

Consumers Energy's Roger Morgenstern says his company's lawyer will have someone from Homeland  Security at the sentencing so the judge knows just how serious this is.
