See The Michigan Street Corridor Plan In 3-D

Grand Rapids city planners continue with their vision for the Michigan Street Corridor Project -- the area on Michigan Street from the medical mile east to Fuller.

Saturday, planners invite neighbors to exchange ideas for the potential reuse of property located on the northeast corner of Michigan Street and Diamond Avenue with the use of a hands-on activity involving building blocks which are transformed into 3-dimensional illustrations.

"They'll be able to see it, what the plans are and what it looks like in a manner you can't get until it gets built. So it'll give a 'real-world' look at what is possible in a what that would be possible otherwise."

City Planner Suzanne Schulz says the Michigan Street Corridor Project has many moving pieces and parts; land use, transportation (transit, bicycle, vehicular, pedestrian), streetscape, and housing to name a few.

"Residents have told us they want a mixed-use, walkable, transit-friendly environment. We want to try to apply that to a site and show them what that means and how it works."

The guiding principles for the Michigan Street Corridor Project strive to balance parts with the goal of improving the quality of life and of the built environment. How can new development projects support the goals and be sustainable? The purpose of the exercise is to learn how community preferences, corridor guiding principles and goals can be translated into a project that provides a mixed used development that is more attractive, green, walkable and distinct.

The planning session is at the Salvation Army Fulton Heights Community Center, 1215 Fulton St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Participants should enter the lower level from the Evangeline Street (north) side of the building.
