Snyder: Flawed Political Culture Causes Shutdown

Gov. Rick Snyder says Michigan will be harmed by the partial federal government shutdown, which he blames on a flawed national political culture.

The Republican governor says that more than 40 percent of the state's budget comes from federal funding. It pays for services such as Medicaid and food assistance for the needy.

He says a shutdown for a day or two won't have much effect. But if it lasts much longer, Snyder says the consequences could be severe.

Snyder says Michigan has balanced its budget three years in a row and eliminated a $1.5 billion deficit by putting politics aside. He says Washington should follow the state's example.
