Officials say Michigan's tourism industry is expected to grow as the state begins advertising more in Canada, Europe and China.
The Detroit News reports the state's tourism industry experienced a banner year in 2013, buoyed by record hotel occupancy rates in some parts of the state. Other measures such as visitor volume, spending and pricing are rising.
Michigan State University tourism expert Sarah Nicholls says "everything is moving in the right direction'' and more growth is likely this year.
The only exception in 2013, which was expected, was a dip in visitation at national parks because of the federal government shutdown.
Monday is the second day of the Pure Michigan Governor's Conference on Tourism near Traverse City. The state's Pure Michigan tourism campaign has worked to attract visitors.
