Elections are being monitored today in both Detroit and Hamtramck to "protect against discrimination," according to the U-S Justice Department.
Assistant US Attorney Pamela Thompson is leading the effort. She will oversee the handling of any complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses.
There will be Justice Department personnel on hand at polling places in both cities. They will also be present in Flint to ensure compliance with a settlement under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The department said monitoring also will take place in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties in Ohio and Orange County in New York.
There were no specific reasons for selecting the six cities for monitoring.
