Voting Opens for Valentine’s Ice Sculpture at Rosa Parks Circle

Over 3,000 pounds of ice will be shipped downtown for next month's Valent-ICE event. Until then, voters have the chance to decide what they would like to see carved out of the ice.

Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. has hired ‘Ice Gurus’ Randy Finch and Derek Maxfield, stars of the Food Network’s Ice Brigade television show, to carve the sculptures. Voters are given the chance to pick the preferred design, which will be revealed by the artists on Feb. 12th.

Mandy Cech is Marketing and Communitications Manager at Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. and says the polls open Tuesday, Jan. 21st and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24th.

"They can go to downtowngr.org and that will take them to a survey where they can choose 1 out of 5 ice sculptures that they would like to see carved."

Voters also have the opportunity to have their name or a special Valentine’s message sculpted into ice. Cech says for every $20 donated to The Heartside Fund through the Downtown Inc. website, people can have 9 characters etched into an ice sculpture or 18 characters for $30. Admission for the event is free.

"This year we're really encouraging all of the public to have a say in what ice sculpture is carved outside the Grand Rapids Art Museum, so the voting is completely open to the public."

Local food vendors will be at Rosa Parks Circle for the live carving that takes place from 12-2 p.m. on Feb. 12th.
