Woman Dies, Son Hurt Attempting Rescue from Fire

Western Michigan authorities say a disabled woman in her 70s was killed in a fire at the home of her son, who was injured trying to rescue her.

Firefighters in Belding received a call about 10:10 a.m. Sunday and found a blaze tearing through the house. Belding is a city of 5,800 in Ionia County, about 25 miles east-northeast of Grand Rapids.

Fire Chief Gregg Moore says the woman died about 3 hours later at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

He didn't release the name of the victim. Moore says the son's injuries aren't life-threatening.

There's no immediate word on what caused the fire.
